Choosing Big Hamster Cages

Hamsters are a perfect choice for a childs' first pet, or for apartment dwellers, they are friendly and enjoy the company of humans.  Before getting a hamster for a child be sure that they are old enough to be able to handle the hamster without squooshing it.

Hamsters are nocturnal, and during the evening hours they can be quite active.  They are also excellent climbers, so you want to be sure that your hamster cage has plenty of vertical surface to scale.  This is where a large hamster cage comes in handy.

When you are considering what type of big hamster cage to buy, you will probably be choosing between two main types - a plastic habitat, or a wire metal one.

As a minimum - your hamster should have room in its cage for a hamster wheel, a structure to hide in, and chew toys and objects.  This will ensure that he gets plenty of exercise and also is comfortable.

Plastic hamster habitats come in many configurations, you can even link two or more together to great a super-giant-mega hamster cage.  There are also many choices in colors with these large plastic cages.  Primary colors are the most popular, but you can also get pink, purple, or even metallic.

Metal hamster homes also come in a variety of levels and usually include different levels, so that your hamster can climb and be active.

My personal preferance is a metal wire home with a deep plastic bottom.  This configuration gives your pet plenty of room, but also allows you to be able to get in and out of the cage and to clean it easily.  One of the biggest benefits to a metal cage is that the latches last a lot longer.

Because hamsters typically can live for 2 to 3 years you will want a cage that will last for the duration of your pets life.  Also hamsters are solitary animals, so it is wise to have just one in a single enclosure.

Have fun looking at all of the options for big hamster cages.  There are plenty to choose from.
